Presently in harmful nevertheless unsurprising revelations: Crazy Rich Asians creator Kevin Kwan was reportedly pressured by a film producer to make the information’s Chinese language language-American protagonist, Rachel Chu, a white woman as an alternative.

Kwan detailed the experience, which occurred sooner than the information was even revealed, in an interview with Leisure Weekly.

“They wished to change the heroine proper right into a white woman,” he outlined. “I was like, ‘Correctly, you’ve missed the aim totally.’ I said, ‘No, thanks.’”

Hollywood whitewashing, in reality, is egregious and nothing new. (Take note Scarlett Johansson in Ghost inside the Shell? Emma Stone in Aloha?) On this particular case, making Rachel a white woman would efficiently spoil the plot of the information, which largely focuses on a Chinese language language-American woman’s experience of spending time in Asia.

It’s a good issue, then, that this harmful idea did not come to go. In the long term, Constance Wu, who’s Taiwanese-American, was stable as Rachel.

Crazy Rich Asians will hit theaters on August 17, 2018.
