Project Loon cleared to help restore wireless in Puerto Rico

Cell services outages by county in Puerto Rico

About September 29th the X group said it had been looking into methods to assist Puerto Rico with Project Loon, like the manner it helped provide service in Peru after intense rains and flood struck the country in March. But, Loon had already been testing using Telefonica in Peru, which sped up the procedure.

In a report issued yesterday (PDF), ” the FCC stated 83 percentage of mobile sites in Puerto Rico are still out of service, combined with 57 percentage at the US Virgin Islands and 100 percentage in St. John. In addition, it took the step of producing its own Hurricane Recovery Task Force which will focus on restoring services to the islands.

We are thankful for the help of the FCC and the Puerto Rican government as we work hard to see whether it is possible to utilize Loon balloons to deliver emergency connectivity into the island in that time of need. To send sign to people’s apparatus, Loon needs to be incorporated using a telco spouse’s network — that the balloons can not do it independently. We have been making solid progress with this second step and would love to thank everybody who’s been lending a hand.
